Lilies in the Bedroom
This piece portrays the lilies that my wife potted and placed in our bedroom by the hideaway glass door leading to the pool deck. I limited
the tessera shapes to mainly squares and rectangles. The blue background blends nicely with the wall color where it hangs. It enhances the
bright, outdoorsy look in the part of the bedroom near the pool. This piece is 25”Wx27”H (including the frame) done entirely with vitreous
glass tile on 3/4-inch cabinet-grade plywood. I used light-gray grout.
I hand-cut 3/4-inch vitreous glass tiles into quarters for the background and intermingled the colors so it appears to fade from light to dark.
The flowers and leaves are primarily rectangles that, when combined with what I consider to be wide grout spacing, give the piece an
almost childlike look, which works well where it hangs.

This piece hangs in the bar at one of the local tennis clubs. Just a basic design, nothing fancy, but it looks good on the wall. I cut each
tessera piece from stained glass. This piece is 24"Wx28"H (including the frame). When the tennis players gather in the bar for drinks after
their matches, I hope they don't throw darts at the yellow ball instead of the dart board!

Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity Crest
|
This is the Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji) fraternity crest with the Fiji symbol in each of the four corners. Several years ago, my youngest son,
Robert, asked me to make it for him as a gift. This piece is 23"Wx29"H (including the frame). I used dark-gray grout, but it still looks light
adjacent to the pure-black tesserae. Isn't the science of color amazing? The gray grout looks black adjacent to the white tesserae of the
owl, but it looks white adjacent to the black tesserae. It's fascinating how our eyes see colors when juxtaposed.
