How to Make Glass Mosaic Tile Art: A World of Tessera Types

Tesserae (the Latin plural of "tessera") are the pieces of glass and other objects that you arrange and adhere to your mosaic's foundation.  You
can use almost anything in your mosaic, so be creative.  Don’t be limited by just the most common types of tessera, such as vitreous glass tiles,
stained glass, and smalti.  Use your imagination.  Try buttons, shells, and other unusual material that can make your mosaic unique.  For
example, a while ago I saw a family picture collage surrounded by a mosaic frame that had a baby tooth from each grandchild.  Don't be afraid to
be creative.

Ensure you plan your mosaic before gluing anything to the foundation.  Don’t go crazy buying a bunch of tessera material without thinking about
some basic, yet important, factors.  For example, ask yourself where the mosaic will be displayed.  Outdoor mosaics require weatherproof
tesserae.  Will the mosaic be hung on the wall or used as a stepping stone?  You should not use sharp tesserae for stepping stones.  These are
the kinds of simple things you must think about before jumping in.  Think about how much tessera material you need to finish the project.  You
must plan your work.  Know what you need--and how much you need--before buying or making your tessera material.

Vitreous glass, stained glass, and smalti are the most common tessera materials, especially for mosaic wall art.  Creative artists have created
beautiful mosaic masterpieces using just about anything.  The following are some other tessera materials to consider using for your next
mosaic: millefiori, ceramic tile (broken pieces), crockery, glass gems and marbles, buttons, shells, keys, beads, coins, pebbles and stones,
plastic doodads, costume jewelry, and hardware (e.g., bolts, nails, screws, nuts).

These materials may seem odd at first glance, but you never know what a creative artist can do with them.  I'll bet someone somewhere can turn
a bunch of rusty nails into a lovely mosaic that would be a great gift for a carpenter.  Don’t let anything hold back your creativity and imagination.  In
art, no idea is crazy.  Sometimes the best ideas are the craziest.
