Here's my story.... For years, I focused my mosaics on wall art using various types of tessera, such as vitreous
glass tiles and stained glass. I never thought about applying beautiful mosaic art to furniture. A few years ago, my
wife wanted to throw away some old end tables that I thought were perfectly fine. I figured the only way she’d let me
keep them was to turn them into pieces of art. So, after just a few weeks of mosaic work in my spare time, I saved a
thousand bucks by not having to buy replacement tables. In fact, my wife and I loved how they turned out so much
that I was inspired to eventually shift my focus from mosaic wall art to creating lovely mosaic tables, mosaic table
tops, and mosaic furniture.
I wanted to do something truly unique with my mosaic tables and mosaic furniture, something different, something that
mosaic and stained glass enthusiasts have probably never seen. I explored the Internet, using lots of different search
terms such as "mosaic table," "mosaic furniture," "mosaic table top," and "mosaic tile table." It became apparent that
most mosaic table artists focus their work on round bistro or kitchen tables that use metal stands and use common
mosaic designs and tessera shapes. Since I wanted something different, I wasn’t interested in creating these types of
mosaic tables and mosaic furniture.
I thought, “What about mosaic tables, mosaic table tops, and mosaic furniture made of wood, such as end tables or
sofa tables, that can be displayed in the living room, dining room, bedroom, or anywhere?” I searched but found little
of what I was looking for. That’s when it hit me. “If you want something truly different, why not create beautiful mosaic
furniture using wood tables instead of metal stands?” Then I thought, “Lots of artists use geometric designs on their
mosaic tables, so how can I be different?” At that instant, I looked up at the stained glass transom window above our
front door and, again, it hit me. “I wonder how a stained glass pattern would look as a mosaic table top.”
I decided to create a small stained glass mosaic table top as an experiment to see how it would look. I found a small
side table at a local furniture store that carries unfinished furniture. I drew a simple pattern on the table top and began
cutting glass. Before long, the piece was finished. I couldn’t believe how good it looked. After the final clean and buff,
I brought it into the house and set it next to the fireplace. My wife came home and immediately fell in love with it.
Since then, I’ve been making beautiful stained glass mosaic tables and mosaic furniture, and I've enjoyed every minute
of it. My favorites are the sofa and entry tables. They look so wonderful in foyers and hallways in homes, and in
lobbies and waiting areas in offices or clubhouses. I enjoy seeing how other people use these truly unique and
beautiful pieces in their interior designs.
