Transform an Old Table into a Piece of Art
Page 3
I made patterns for three leaf sizes (small, medium, and large) using regular paper, and then traced them onto various colors of green
stained glass using a felt-tip pen.  Occasionally, I flipped the pattern upside-down to give some leaves a different look.  I traced and cut a
bunch of leaves of each size and color, and then laid them on the tabletop.  I rearranged them until I got the proper balance of shape and
color.  Then, I simply glued each piece in-place.

The background for the inner portion is now done.  Notice that the white background tesserae in this outer section are bigger, but for no
particular reason than to add a bit of contrast against the smaller background pieces.
All tesserae are now cut and glued.  I'm excited to finish it by grouting and sealing, but I must wait at least 24 hours for the glue to fully
dry.  To ensure a good bond, I waited two full days before grouting.
I started grouting from the edge working inward.  Notice in the picture below that there's no grout in the center section (I haven't gotten
there yet because I'm focusing on the vitreous tiles on the edge).  I worked the edges first because the vitreous tiles require just a bit
more work that the rest of the surface.  I squeezed grout not only into the top surface but also into the exposed sides to give it a finished
look.  I wanted to minimize the distraction of the grout lines, so I used light-gray grout, although it looks dark in the picture because it's
wet. It lightens nicely as it dries.

If you're nervous about the grouting process and slopping messy cement all over your beautifully laid tesserae, don't fret.  Please refer to
my eBook for easy, detailed, step-by-step instructions on the entire grouting process.  You can do it.  Yes, you can!
